Life Insurance… Good To Know!
People usually buy things that have an instantly realisable value.
Life Insurance is not often looked upon that way but you could think of it this way… A sort of Guardian Angel that is looking out for your family and loved ones.
I’ve personally had life insurance cover for most of my adult life, initially I had to because it was a requirement as part of my mortgage. So I shopped around the local high street insurance brokers (circa 1980’s) and got the required cover for the cheapest price I could find.
To keep the premiums really low, the insurance broker said it would be best for me to take a 10 year decreasing term life insurance. Oh well, he was the expert!
That initial ten years went by far too quickly and thankfully it wasn’t necessary for my wife to make a claim.
So, did I waste my money? There is a worrying tendency for some people to thing that it was a waste of money.
Let’s take a quick look at the worst case scenario and assume that I died during the time that the insurance was in place.
At the time of taking out the Life Insurance I had two young children. It never really occurred to me that if I died, how would my wife cope without my income?
It seems really irresponsible to me now but I only bought Life Insurance because I had to –
because the mortgage company insisted on it. Otherwise I wouldn’t have set it up.
I was only 25 and the likelihood of me dying was very remote, or so I thought.
Can you see the mindset of some people (including the young me?). I’ve not studied the actuarial tables recently but yes, statistically I was less likely to die but it was certainly not impossible!
To further illustrate how silly I was… yes, I smoked.
This made my life Insurance even more expensive. Duh!
So back to my poor widowed wife scenario…
How would she have paid the mortgage? That simply wasn’t going to happen.
So the house could have been repossessed. Where would my family live?
How would my poor wife pay for things?
It’s a nightmare scenario that still makes me shiver today! And all so unnecessary.
